Cloud Filling Stitch Tutorial
Would you like to learn a fun new stitch today?! I picked Cloud Filling Stitch to share with you because, well, it would fill a pretty adorable cloud!
Let's just jump right in: doodle yourself a happy looking cloud, and fill it with close parallel (horizontal) lines. The closeness of the lines determines the denseness of your fill; my lines are 1/4" apart.
With a normal embroidery needle, stitch small vertical stitches along your drawn lines, staggering their placement per row, checkerboard-style. Keep the distance as even as you can.
Now switch to a cross-stitch (dull) needle and a new color, if you like. Come up through the fabric at an edge point and start threading your floss under your previous stitches as shown: first under a stitch on one row, then through the next on the row above, then back to the next stitch on the original row, and so on.
Continue through your shape, connecting each row to the one above (or below) it, reusing stitches as you work. In the end, each little vertical stitch will have two rows of threading through it.
And to finish it up, I outlined my cloud in a thick outline of silver chain stitch. Give it a try! Experiment with how close you place your stitches, your color choices, and varying the number of strands you use for each stitch element!
What are you stitching? Please share in the &Stitches Flickr group. We'd love to see it!
